The Aftermath of Tragedy

- Sermons - Growing Through Life's Challenges

Preached at the Sunday Morning service on September 11, 2011 by Pastor Ray Bertolet.
Part of the Growing Through Life's Challenges series.

Today is a day we will all remember. In a moment, any adult could tell you were they were when they first heard the news about the tragic events as they began to unfold. That single moment at 8:44 AM on September 11, 2001 began a series of events that changed thousands of lives forever. Life for many families will never be the same again. But with such a loss, can we find anything of value. Loss can be something that tears at your heart the rest of your life but there can be some valuable lessons learned from the tragic events that come into our lives.

Job 1:13-19 Now on the day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15 and the Sabeans attacked and took them. They also slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 16 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 17 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three bands and made a raid on the camels and took them and slew the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." 18 While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, 19 and behold, a great wind came from across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people and they died, and I alone have escaped to tell you." Pastor Ray – Harry and I just listened to your message. Again, very soul searching and thought provoking. I think of the Scripture passage that says “Examine yourself and see if your in the faith”. This is a daily walk – keep on being filled with the Spirit – confessing sin and renewing right fellowship with the Lord. Good exhortation! Blessings, H&S

God wants us to Himself, with no idols before Him. This message helps us to realize how easy it is to become distracted from the things of the Lord in our daily lives.
